Anthony Gross born 1903, London. Member of the London Group. Studied at the Slade School and Ecole des Beaux Arts. Painter and etcher. Painted mostly in watercolours. Had an international reputation as an etcher and engraver and wrote a book on the subject. He also made cartoons and films. Official War Artist. As this painting shows he had an individual technique of intricate drawing (the influence of etching) overlaid by patches of clear colours. There are works in the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of New York and other collections. He died in France in 1984.
